It is easy to start from a catalogue: a handsome cart, a familiar brand, “what the neighbouring clinic bought”. In practice you pay for whether the package covers daily exams without constant compromise — not for a line in a price list. A calmer order: job and room constraints first, then system class, then probes, then training. The model is a consequence, not the entry point.
First: which animals dominate — companion, farm, equine, exotic? That drives presets and the probe set, not a “universal” marketing still. Second: where does the work happen — suite, field, or both? Third: which exams hold the caseload — abdomen, reproduction, cardiac, soft tissue? The answers already narrow the class: stationary Vetus, compact DP for the road, or a two-role mix.
If the main flow is complex diagnostics in the suite, a portable “to save money” often costs more in friction: ergonomics, probes or image headroom. Splitting roles is often more honest: a stationary system for hard cases and a separate field contour. If the clinic lives on the road — farm, reproduction, barn — the logic flips: weight, battery, how easy the panel is to disinfect. A suite system can come later when expert volume grows inside the building.
Ultrasound quotes usually break on the probe set and species presets, not on “which Vetus”. Base shipment versus extras for equine, cardio or small-animal work are different sums and different training curves. Ask the distributor what ships in the base kit, what your exam diary still needs, and who will scan. That is a conversation about clinic work, not “the newest model”.
